Encounter

Mauerstreifen_flyer_1

The sculpture consists of two female figures approaching each other. It addresses the idea of meeting on different levels and different angles: the meeting between East & West on the former Berlin wall strip — crossing borders as a kind of liberation. This liberation is shown in a tender, soft, and erotic coming closer of two women against social convention. The tenderness is a contrast to the metal material, which reflects the coldness and hardness of the "death strip" wall/border history, and the fear, that are still tangible in this place. The sculpture is meant to encourage people to lead their lives in their own different ways, to deal with differences with tenderness, friendliness and playfulness, to enjoy life in spite of borders, and across borders. The sculpture is a reference to the alternative lifestyles around the site, such as the Kinderbauernhof (children's farm), and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Artists' House), which both seek to provide an alternative to the gray city life.
